Black History Month 2023

An exciting and educational music experience where participants will take a journey through time and learn about the amazing stories not taught in schools.

This exhibit looks at the Black experience through the individual experiences of 5 Black artists, while exploring ideas of status, racism, discrimination, spirituality, family traditions, and social justice.

Join Professor Dominique Garcia in a low-intensity yoga flow session. Take a moment to match breath to movement and be guided by song lyrics that soothe your soul.

A campus field trip to California’s first African American town. Participants will engage in active learning experiences that highlight the stories that created the town and what ultimately led to its desolation.

Recharge with a cultural experience featuring the Fresno African Drumming Circle! Facilitators will guide participants in learning songs, rhythms, and beginner techniques of the djembe drum.

The National African American Read-In is the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. Participants have 5 minutes to read from literary work by a Black author or writer.

This career panel will feature 5 local black professionals in law, tech, entrepreneurship, health, and media/entertainment!

Join us as we take a day trip to San Francisco to visit the Museum of African Diaspora and take a campus tour of San Francisco State University. We have space for 30 CCC students to participate.

Professor Dr. Patrick Fontes's talk is: "The Uhuru: Black Student Newspaper at Fresno State College, 1969."

Professor Dominique Garcia's talk is: "This is a Man's World: The Overshadowed Stories of Black Female Civil Rights Activists."

2023 Inductees: Mr. Maxie Parks, Dr. Arrie Smith, Elder Harry Y. Miller (posthumously)

Guest Facilitator, Dr. Francine Oputa, will lead a discussion on race, power, and gender roles using themes from the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” along with a closing ceremony honoring Black History Month and making a way into Women’s “Herstory” Month.
