Why study Geography at CCC

Geography is a holistic discipline which can augment many other fields of study. Our faculty teach about the physical and cultural characteristics of the world with an equity-minded, student-centered focus. We offer a wide array of relevant classes for transfer. We also offer an associate of arts transfer degree in geography. Our instructors have both professional experience in the field and academic experience. We focus on your success and preparing you for your career.

Our Philosophy

We want all our students to appreciate the peoples of the world the environments and we live in. We encourage you to think critically and analyze the human-environmental issues facing our planet and its inhabitants. In our classes you will consider global and local perspectives to challenges around the world and prepare for your academic future and your career.

Career Opportunities

There is a wide array of job opportunities available to Geography majors:

 

Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems are computer-based tools that collect, analyze, store, retrieve, and display spatial data. It is the art and science of map-making.

Urban Planning

One major area of employment is Urban Planning. Urban Planning is the process that local governments use to determine the intensity and distribution of land uses. Urban Planners work very closely with planning commissions, city councils, and developers. They enforce rules and regulations, and they also help facilitate development in cities.

Environmental Field

Many geographers are hired as environmental professionals in the public sector working for agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and many others. Many geographers also get hired in the private sector working as environmental consultants for developers.

Education

Geography is a great choice for educators because it teaches us about and borrows from many different disciplines. It gives instructors a broad, well-rounded perspective on environmental and social issues. Teachers with a geography background gain a global perspective and an appreciation for different cultures and conditions.
