Chemistry

Why study Chemistry at CCC?

Have you ever been interested in how to make medications, or how to make vaccines? Are you interested in ways to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, or how to store energy from the sun and wind in batteries? Do you want to monitor the quality of our water and air to make sure it is safe for all of us? Have you ever been interested in knowing why rubies are red, why diamonds are so hard, or why metals are used in all our cookware? Consider studying chemistry, the “central science” that ties biology, physics, earth science, environmental science, and engineering together.

Chemistry focuses on understanding the role of atoms and how the bonds they form with each other result in all sorts of different properties that we experience: color, conductivity, solubility, acidity, basicity, smell, and many other properties. The foundational nature of atoms and bonds in everything we touch and use around us makes chemistry integral to your understanding of the universe at large.

Studying chemistry at Clovis Community College opens the doors to many fields of study. At Clovis Community College, you can take a variety of chemistry courses needed for your major before transferring to a 4-year institution to complete your bachelor’s degree. Depending on your major, the type and number of chemistry courses you may need to take will differ – please speak to a counselor about your plan.

Our Philosophy

With our small class sizes, a dedicated team of instructors and science lab coordinators, a tutorial center staffed with STEM tutors and excellent lab facilities, we will prepare you well for your future educational endeavors. Come join us.

Instrumentation

In addition to our state-of-the-art new classroom and laboratory facilities, the Chemistry program has an emphasis on hands-on use of equipment and instrumentation for general science laboratory experiments using pH meters and visible spectrometers. Students can also utilize instrumentation such as:

  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR)
  • Gas Chromatography with both Flame Ionization and Thermal Conductivity (GC-FID/TCD)
  • Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS)
  • Liquid Chromatography with Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS)
  • H-1/C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer (NMR)
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma with Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES)
