Office of Student Services Update - October 2024
Happy October!
This is my favorite time of year as I’m a complete fanatic of all things pumpkin and holiday festivities. Today is also Transfer Day, so please visit, and encourage students to visit, all the wonderful booths outside. In addition to all of September’s regular campus and district meetings, I had the pleasure of attending Lorrie Hopper’s retirement celebration, California Health Sciences University-College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Accreditation Celebration, College Night, our CCC Scholarship Ceremony, our CCC Welcome Black event, many of the Achieving the Dream meetings, and Emergency Response Team training. Emilee Slater and the entire Outreach team did a wonderful job setting up for College Night and making sure CCC had the best-looking area. We talked to hundreds of middle school and high school students and had no voices by the end of the night! Rebecca and her Financial Aid team did a fabulous job with the Scholarship Ceremony as well and awarded a record number of scholarships in coordination with the Foundation. And while this certainly was not our first Welcome Black event, this was the first time that our homegrown support program Black & African American Student Engagement (BAASE) led the effort and gave our students a new program with which to identify. Thank you to Sasha, Akyia, Caryss, and Clarke-Lauren for their work and great turnout.
We wrapped up our work with the California State Auditor’s Office on the transfer audit, and the final report was released to the public last week. This audit took place over the last year and includes recommendations for all three California systems on ADTs, articulation, electronic degree planners, and staffing. View the full report. Clovis did not receive any formal findings or recommendations, and we were used several times as the example for Student Education Plan (SEP) efforts. Kudos to our Counseling Department for being the model! And thank you to Carla, Stacy, Erica, Rachel, and Tasha for the work that went into providing the auditors what they needed from us.
Counseling
Transfer
Currently working on e-verifications for 163 students who applied to transfer Spring 25 to a CSU and stated they will have completed their ADT before transferring. The CSU and UC application filing period is October 1 – December 2. There are several application workshops being facilitated during the months of October and November.
Transfer Day Festival is on October 1, and will include over 30 representatives from various CSUs, UCs, out of state, and private baccalaureate institutions. Please come out and support the event.
We will be having “Transfer Rep Visits” from the following colleges: Fresno State, UC Merced, UCLA, UCSC, Fresno Pacific.
The month of September was the University of California (UC) Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) application filing period. There are over 100 students who submitted a TAG to a participating UC campus. Students have an opportunity to apply for a TAG to the following UCs: UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Riverside.
SEP Campaign
The deadline for enrollment priority based on a comprehensive SEP was September 27. Counselors were busy during September reaching out to students who did not have an SEP on file and making sure they received one before the deadline.
Close to Completion List
Counselors are reaching out to students who were identified as having completed a degree or certificate, or are close to completing, and letting them know they are eligible to apply through Self Service.
Our very own Clarke-Lauren Richard was selected by the Academic Senate Foundation Directors for a scholarship to attend the 2nd Annual NANDI Conference on October 3-4, 2024.
Career Resource Center (CRC)
A pop-up clothing closet event took place at the Farmers Market on September 19 with over 70 students stopping to visit the booth. Over 40 students took home clothing (100 professional items and 20 basic needs items).
The Career Resource Center hosted a Job Fair and another pop-up clothing closet event on September 25. Approximately 20 employers and dozens of students participated in the Job Fair. The pop-up clothing closet served 17 students at this event, distributing 24 professional items and 8 basic needs items.
DSP&S
October is Disability Awareness Month. “Disable the Label” t-shirts will be available, first come first serve, to staff and students at a drop-by event. More info to come.
Transition to College (TTC) application season is in full swing, and our DSP&S Counselor Jackie Smith is traveling to high schools to help students sign up for DSP&S and to teach them about college disability services.
Our new DSP&S Director Kellie Greiner began on September 3. Kellie Greiner can be reached at kellie.greiner@cloviscollege.edu and found on campus in AC2-243.
EOPS/CARE, NextUp & CalWORKs
Many of our program staff members will be attending the CCCEOPSA Conference the first week of October. Congratulations to Kelly Tabay and Ashlee Hickey on being accepted as workshop presenters! Workshop Title – Best Practices for CARE Students: Transformative Experiences through CARE Workshops.
The program is also hosting the first EOPS Student Social Event of the semester on Friday, October 4 with board games, cards, snacks and more! This event will provide EOPS students with an opportunity to meet and socialize with other EOPS students to create valuable connections.
TRIO
TRIO is actively recruiting for the 24-25 cohort in both SSS and STEM Programs through classroom visits and campus events.
The Paint Night and Family Mixer was well attended in September.
In October, TRIO is planning to take a group of students to tour Fresno State and visit the Downing Planetarium.

Male Success Initiative (MSI)
We are thrilled to report that our Male Success Initiative (MSI) Luncheons for August and September were a great success, and we deeply appreciate the participation from our students. It was a fantastic start to what we believe will be a series of powerful events designed to support growth and success here at Clovis Community College.
At the August luncheon, Dr. JoJo Reyes delivered an insightful presentation on the "Phases of Maturity." His discussion offered valuable perspectives on personal and academic growth, and we hope it resonated with our attendees.
September’s MSI luncheon focused on networking and the importance of building a solid networking system, since this plays a crucial role in education by enhancing professional growth, fostering collaboration, and expanding access to resources that can positively impact students' educational journeys.
Moving forward, we are excited to announce the development of the MSI Canvas Page, a virtual hub that will allow us to connect, share resources, and engage in meaningful discussions. The page will feature Clovis Community College support systems, upcoming events/activities, volunteer opportunities, discussion boards, and career information.
MSI is also working on volunteer opportunities and the next Male Success Mixer 2.0 event.
Outreach
The fall semester has just begun, but the Outreach team is already in full swing recruiting next year’s students. Here is what our team is working on these days.
Application workshops with our high school seniors began September 4 and will continue over the next month. Statewide fraud filters have made it difficult to get the applications processed, but we are doing the follow-up work needed to push them through. We have helped thousands of students at our feeder schools so far, and we will be working with additional students who were not able to attend their school’s workshops.
This past month was busy with community events such as the Fresno Area, Tulare County, and Kings County College Nights; Central CA Women’s Conference; and resource fairs with Big Sandy Rancheria and the Fresno Area Indian Health Project. We attended back-to-school nights and college fairs at our feeder schools as well as Duncan Polytechnical, Sanger West, Matilda Torres, Big Picture High School, and more. Next month you will see us at large events such as the Feria De Educación at Fresno State, Career Tech Expo at Chukchansi Park, and Super Saturday at Fresno State.
Campus tours continue to increase with groups visiting from Clovis North, Clovis East, Buchanan, Clovis High, Reyburn Intermediate, and Granite Ridge Intermediate. We also provide tours for individuals and small groups. Contact our Outreach Coordinator, Amy Yocupicio at 559-325-5035 for more information.
On October 4, we will be co-hosting the SCCCD High School Counselor Conference along with our three sister colleges. This event is a time to connect with and update our high school partners, who are instrumental to the success of our outreach efforts, with direct matriculants. This year’s conference will be held at Reedley College and will host over 100 high school counselors.
