Week of October 21

Good afternoon, Colleagues.

Herndon Campus

Kimberly Duong and I met with Herndon staff on Tuesday. We welcomed Sgt Glenn Gardner and Officer Gilbert Ovalle to the meeting. In addition to providing necessary introductions, we were able to discuss PD efforts at the Herndon Campus as well as at Willow. Since needs at both sites are a little different, this was a chance for all to clarify understandings and expectations. Many thanks to both for spending the hour with us. Thanks to the SCCCD Police Department, including Lt Gary Mejia, for their partnership and for helping to assure that all our questions are answered and needs are met. We are grateful for the work you do!

ASG

Starbucks at Willow and Herndon hosted a Coffee with the President on October 16. We had a good turnout of students, which led to some good conversations about the topic that is paramount for them right now: funding to support ASG activities, including club activities. Lots of great ideas were discussed. I have decided that the focus of the fundraising drive that will culminate in Giving Tuesday will be scholarships and ASG. I appreciate your help in spreading the word and helping us collect funds for this vital campaign.

Victor Rivas Rivers Presentation

I was able to attend last Thursday's talk by Victor Rivas Rivers for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Thanks to Renee Garcia, Deputy Title IX Coordinator, for organizing the talks (morning and evening sessions) and book signings. The evening session, during which I was present, was well-attended. Thanks also to Psych Services, led by Dr. Tabatha Stewart, for being available in case anyone needed their support. I appreciate that we take care of all participating in difficult conversations. These are important conversations, and so is taking care to hold them in a respectful and caring manner.

Sincerely,

Monica Chahal, Ed.D. (she/her)
