Campus cats are getting spayed and neutered

Feb 10, 2025

Great news and update from the Conservation Club!

You will see cat traps on campus starting Monday (please do not interfere/see below). The Conservation Club is using some of the money from their fundraiser to pay for the cats to:

  1. Get a veterinary check-up
  2. Vaccines
  3. To get neutered

This applies to all the cats on our campus! We want them to stay on our campus but most importantly to be healthy.

Crucial facts about why its is necessary to spay and neuter:

  1. Female cats in heat will welcome more males to the campus and can cause cats to become injured or die from territory brawls, disputes, or during the act of mating.
  2. Pregnant female cats have a high mortality rate from pregnancy and birth complications.
  3. 40-75% of kittens born feral do not make it to 6 months old. It is a very hard life for kittens on the streets.
  4. Outdoor cats kill a lot of native birds! Some free-roaming domestic cats kill more than 100 animals each year! Keeping a small neutered cat population isn’t as ecologically damaging than having a population of intact cats.
  5. Fixing a male and female cat results in preventing more than 2,000 unwanted births in just four years, and more than 2 million in 8 years!

What we need from YOU!

  1. Do not interfere with traps. If you let a cat out of a trap there's a high chance we won't be able to trap them again. There is also a chance that freeing a stressed-out cat may put the person who is freeing them in danger.
  2. Do not feed the cats. By leaving out food we may not be able to entice them into the traps or may welcome more cats/wildlife. We are already working on getting our cats fed in a responsible way!

Many have asked how to donate to the Conservation Club to help pay for the costs of the spaying and neutering. You can take cash or a check to the Business Office in AC3-250 (ask for Desiree Encinas).
