This week’s theme for Cybersecurity Awareness Month is: Be Cyber Smart.
To be “cyber smart” is to possess a certain mindset that recognizes that cyber threats are real and cyber safety is necessary. For example, when you are cyber smart, you look more carefully at email messages:
- What is the sender’s email address? Does it match the purported name?
- Could the email have been sent by a compromised mailbox?
- Could this be a phishing email?
- Should you click on an email link or open an attachment?
- Would your bank, or Amazon, or PayPal, or the helpdesk send you a message requesting you to click on a link to change your password?
- Is there a banner indicating that this is an external email on a message that purports to be from an SCCCD employee? Also, being cyber smart means knowing that cyber threat actors not only use email, but also texts, phone calls, voice mail, social media, social engineering, and much more for scamming purposes.
To help you address the bulleted questions about email and become more cyber smart, here is a list of 35 cybersecurity and data protection tips that promote cybersecurity awareness and safety. The list is accessible under the SCCCD Resource Links of the Portal. Do Your Part.
