Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)
Do this if you are healthy:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. View Proper Handwashing Technique.
- Use hand sanitizers only when soap and water are not available. After using hand sanitizers, be sure to wash with soap and water as soon as available.
- Always wash hands before touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Consistently get 7 to 9 hours of good sleep every night to keep your immune system working effectively. You are 4 times more likely to get sick if you are sleep deprived. Try our free campus Guided Meditation for Healthful Sleep.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Remind others to cover their cough or sneeze.
- Encourage others to stay home if they are sick.
- Manage your stress and anxiety. Practice mindfulness or other relaxation techniques. Consider trying our free campus Health Journeys Guided Meditation
- Avoid these things:
- Handshakes, High Fives
- Sharing utensils, straws, cups, etc.
- Sharing smoking or vaping devices.
- Stay at home as much as possible if you are aged 65 or older, have a compromised immune system or have a serious medical condition such as heart disease, diabetes, or lung disease. These factors put you at higher risk for more serious COVID-19 illness.
Do this if you are sick with any respiratory illness including COVID-19:
- Cover your cough or sneeze by coughing/sneezing into your sleeve or a tissue. If you use a tissue, be sure to dispose of the tissue and wash your hands before touching other surfaces.
- Stay home when sick to avoid exposing others.
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces using regular household cleaning products.
- Get more than 9 hours of good sleep every night when sick to help your immune system fight the illness.
- Call before visiting a healthcare provider. Inform them of your symptoms before you arrive if you plan to obtain medical care for fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Do not visit the health office if sick with fever and cough; go home and call us or your health care provider.
