How to avoid getting sick
Do this if you are healthy:
- Get updated vaccinations/boosters for COVID-19 and the Flu.
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom and before eating.
- Always wash hands before touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Use hand sanitizers only when soap and water are not available. After using hand sanitizers, be sure to wash with soap and water as soon as available.
- Consistently get 7 to 9 hours of good sleep every night to keep your immune system working effectively. You are 4 times more likely to get sick if you are sleep deprived.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Remind others to cover their cough or sneeze.
- Encourage others to stay home if they are sick.
- Manage your stress and anxiety. Excessive stress weakens your immune system and makes you more vulnerable to infection.
- Avoid these things:
- Handshakes, High Fives
- Sharing utensils, straws, cups, etc.
- Sharing smoking or vaping devices.
How to protect others when you are sick
- Cover your cough or sneeze by coughing/sneezing into your sleeve or a tissue. If you use a tissue, be sure to dispose of the tissue and wash your hands before touching other surfaces.
- Stay home when sick to avoid exposing others.
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces using regular household cleaning products.
- Get more than 9 hours of good sleep every night when sick to help your immune system fight the illness.
