Spanish Associate of Arts Degree for Transfer 2021-2022

The Spanish Associate of Arts Degree for Transfer prepares students for transfer to four-year Spanish programs at a CSU campus. Students will acquire the Spanish language in a culturally rich environment and will attain the receptive skills (listening and reading) and the productive skills (speaking and writing) necessary for the communicative competence required for upper division courses in Spanish at a CSU campus. The Spanish Associate of Arts Degree for Transfer is appropriate for students considering careers in fields such as education, health, social services, business, international relations, translation and interpretation, and tourism.

Major requirements (19 units minimum)

Additional Information

  • Students entering the Spanish Program at Spanish 2 or higher are required to satisfy the specific unit requirements of the degree. Students must consult with the Foreign Language Department for approval of course substitutions not included in the list of recommended courses. Substitution Courses list courses approved for students needing to take additional units to compensate for the course/units required as described above.
  • Certification of either the California State University General Education Breadth (CSU GE-Breadth) or the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC-CSU version) is required. CSU GE-Breadth and IGETC advising sheets are available in Student Services, AC2-133, or at CCC GE (CSU/UC) GE and Major Sheets.
  • Courses may double count in the major and CSU GE-Breadth or IGETC.

  1. Engage in conversation using Spanish in daily life situations.
  2. Read with a certain depth of understanding magazine or newspaper articles, short stories and literary excerpts in Spanish.
  3. Write at the intermediate level in Spanish in a variety of modalities including personal and professional letters, short narratives, and descriptive essays.
  4. Recognize and understand cultural similarities and differences between U.S. culture and that of the Spanish-speaking world. Distinguish simple behavioral patterns that represent these cultures and behave in culturally appropriate ways in specific situations.

  1. Completion of 60-semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California StateUniversity, including both of the following:
    1. The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State UniversityGeneral Education – Breadth requirements.
    2. A minimum of 18-semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
  2. Obtainment of a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) also require that students must earn a “C” grade or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.
